Istanbul Crowds Welcome New Year

Complete with all of its good moments and bad, Saturday saw the passing of another year in Istanbul. The celebrations were concentrated in the districts of Taksim, Nişantaşı and Kadıköy.

The central district of Taksim saw thick crowds of revelers take to the famous İstiklal Street early in the evening, cheering and whistling under bright strings of New Year's lights. This year, the Beyoğlu Municipality boasted the introduction of 42 lit tree sculptures that illuminated Taksim Square for those on their way to the crowded alleys and winding streets of Beyoğlu.

In the final minutes before midnight, a packed İstiklal Street echoed with the shouts of the crowd who counted down the last seconds of 2011 before cheering the arrival of 2012.

Over the Bosporus, the booming of fireworks announced to greater Istanbul that the new year had at last arrived.
