Kvitova, Istanbul Each Score Big in WTA Finale

How fitting that a city known as the crossroads of continents played backdrop this week for a junction in the women's game.


Petra Kvitova, the 21-year-old Wimbledon champion who surged from outside the top 30 to claim her place among the elites, capped a breakout season by beating Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in Sunday's WTA Championships final.

Kvitova's win in Istanbul meant that none of the three players perched atop the rankings — No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 2 Kvitova and No. 3 Azarenka — is older than 22.
