Istanbul Municipality releases new book series on city

The richness of Istanbul is the subject a new project prepared by local authorities with support from the European Capital of Culture Agency. ‘Faces of Istanbul’ will include 100 books, each of which features 100 topics about the city. The first 25 books of the series were released this week and when the project is done, 100 books will be on shelves.

“When the project is done, 100 books will be put on the shelves. There are 100 topics in each book. This means that we will present 10,000 faces of Istanbul to readers. And we will become more conscious about the rich culture and beauty of the city,” said Nevzat Bayhan, the general director of Kültür A.Ş., the municipality’s publisher.

Within the scope of the project, Bayhan said they included the first things about Istanbul that came to mind. “Istanbul is not only a city; it is like a state. This is why it is home to the world’s highest number of writers, journalists and poets. It is possible to see hundreds of people in every field of the city.”

Bayhan also said Istanbul was elected the “best performing city in the world” among 150 world metropolises, according to the Global Metro Monitor study conducted jointly by the Brookings Institute, London School of Economics and Deutsche Bank Research.
